Getting around Lima

Jorge Chávez Airport (LIM) is in Callao, about 10–17 km from the tourist neighborhoods, but Lima traffic can stretch the trip, so allow plenty of time. There’s no metro to the airport: use an authorized taxi from the counter, an app (Uber/Cabify) or a private transfer; the Airport Express bus links to Miraflores. In the city the Metropolitano and corridor buses help, but apps are usually the most practical.

Where to stay in Lima

  • MirafloresThe clifftop tourist hub: hotels, parks, the Larcomar mall and Pacific views.
  • BarrancoBohemian, arty district with murals, nightlife and old mansions by the sea.
  • San IsidroElegant financial zone, leafy and calm, with excellent restaurants.
  • Centro HistóricoColonial plazas, cathedrals and balconies; best visited by day.

How much does it cost?

Lima is affordable for a capital, especially for food: its famed cuisine ranges from cheap set menus to fine dining. A mid-range budget runs about 40–75 USD a day.

Is it safe?

Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro are the safe tourist zones and where you should stay. Avoid hailing informal taxis on the street (risk of robbery and “express kidnappings”): always use apps or trusted taxis, watch your belongings in crowded spots, and take care in the Centro after dark.
